Conklin has edge over Howard

Heading into training camp, the No. 2 goalie position for the Red Wings is open. But according to general manager Ken Holland, veteran Ty Conklin has an edge over Jimmy Howard.

"When we go to camp, the No. 2 job is up for grabs," said Holland. "But for Jimmy Howard to be the No. 2 guy, he's going to have to win the job."

In other words, Howard has to outplay Conklin to win the job.

Howard can go to Grand Rapids without passing through waivers. Howard has eight games of NHL experience. Conklin has 110 regular-season games of experience.

Hey Bruce, great work today, as always. Just wondering if you've heard anything from Kenny or the organization about Filppula's contract? He's restricted and what with Kevin Lowe's antics last year it makes me nervous that he's still unsigned. Are the Wings close with him? Will this go to arbritration?

I asked Holland that and he said he's not worried about another offer. He said that opponents do that to teams that have little or no cap space. The Wings have a lot. And if another team did offer Filppula a lot, the Wings will match. Where a big offer could mess up the Red Wings is next season, fitting both Filppula and Zetterberg in under the cap.
