Darren's debut
Ken Kal won't be doing the radio play-by-play tonight because he has laryngitis. So ... Paul Woods will be doing the play-by-play and Darren McCarty will handle the radio color commentary. I think Woods and McCarty is a good backup plan. Wish I was near a radio tonight.

Mac's doing a very nice job for his first time out. He's pretty smooth and jumps in at the right moments. They're not interrupting or talking over each other much.
Plus, Paul's goal call is hilarious.
Can anyone describe Woods' goal call for me?
I thought he just sounded really surprised and caught off guard every time the Wings scored. It was an understated excitment. Kinda like a poor man's Foster Hewitt. He shoots...scores!
I really like Paul, I think he is a fantastic analyst. And I love his sarcasm toward Ken Kal.
I only listened to the first 5-10 min of gameplay and it was a train rec! Paul Woods really couldn't handle the play-by-play. There were large gaps of silence and Mac and Woods would trip in to each other with color commentary. My brain hurt because they were commenting on action in the game but I had no idea what was going on, who had the puck or if the game was even in play.
Darren did a better job with his pre-game analysis than during the game and Paul Woods really seemed out of his element. I really hope it improved as they progressed; however I didn't want to listen and risk an aneurysm.
Too bad you can't DVR radio. Train wreck or bright light, this one would have been a keeper. I love both guys, Mac and Paul, so I have the feeling I would have loved it. I'll never know now.
Bruce, Ken Kal is out again tonight, so you'll get your chance.
If you get a chance to talk with Woods, let him know there's at least one person out there who thought he did all right. And tell him to bring back the trivia challenge. I miss his arbitrary disqualifications of Kenny.
I listened both nights. I thought Woods was subpar, including a weird vocal tic adding "uh" on the end of words.
But I thought Mac was GREAT. He talked a little too much (shocking, I know), but he knows the game and he's articulate and has a good radio voice. He has a future at this.
