Wings' cap update

After the signing of Patrick Eaves, the Red Wings have approximately $55.62 million tied up in 22 players. That leaves $1.18 million left to bring in another forward and leave some wiggle room under the cap.

This 22-man roster includes Justin Abdelkader, Ville Leino and Darren Helm and eight defensemen.

Bruce, Thanks for your updates!
Here and on Twitter! I follow you )))

So, I believe there are two ways for Eaves - either it will be Dan Cleary's way and Eaves will become an important part of the team, or it'll be Kyle Calder's way and he won't find himself in Red Wings... Will see.

The salary cap only counts towards players who are not in Grand Rapids, correct? I'm thinking that if the Wings sign another player, one of those 22 who counts against the $55.6 MM will get sent down to Grand Rapids. So the Wings can effectively spend more than the $1.18 Mil.

Hey Hannibal. You're right about the GR players not counting.

But the Wings will only have more money to spend if the player they bring in makes less than the player they send down. Does that make sense?

In other words, if they send down Abdelkader, $850,000 is freed up. But if they bring in someone for $1 million to replace him, the Wings actually have $150,000 less of cap room to sign a 23rd player.

That said, the Wings went through last season with just 22 players, so they don't need a 23rd. But if they hold at 22, they might need to shift resources ... bring in a forward (giving them 13) and have one less defenseman. That could happen if Lilja isn't ready to play or if another blue-liner is shipped out.

I'm thinking it would be nice to have one more quality free agent forward and not be relying upon Derek Meech or a green player from Grand Rapids to fill in if someone gets hurt or if Maltby and Draper can't compete anymore. Do you think that Holland would consider buying out Maltby or Holmstrom to make some cap space? Maltby is basically just taking up a sweater now and Holmstrom looked last playoff like he's about finished.
