Red Wings Saturday morning skate

No Johan Franzen (headaches) on the ice right now (he's undergoing more tests today), so the Mule will not be in the lineup tonight. No surprise there. Hopefully the tests will result in clearance to play in Game 2.

Chris Chelios is on the ice, but skating with Derek Meech so Cheli's out of the lineup and Andreas Lilja is in. Valtteri Filppula is on the ice practicing, which he hasn't done in more than a week, so that's a good sign.

Darren McCarty led the team through its stretching and had the whole lot smiling and slapping their sticks on the ice. I wasn't sold on his addition to the roster when it happened, but McCarty is a wonderful veteran presence in the locker room and on the ice.

Here are the Red Wings' lines they're working with on the ice right now ...

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom
Hudler-Filppula-Cleary
Drake-Draper-Samuelsson
Maltby-Helm-McCarty

Lidstrom-Rafalski
Kronwall-Stuart
Lebda-Lilja

Osgood
Hasek

I was in your boat as well with not being sold on McCarty at first. But in hindsight, that was more of the 'casual' fan in me talking and not the 'intelligent' fan!

While the casual fan would question bringing in a guy like Mac and might say "give the ice time to a younger guy!", in reality, the experts (ie Ken Holland) know that a veteran like Mac will bring loads more to the team than a youthful player would, especially down the stretch and in the playoffs.

Everyone may think the "new" NHL is strictly about speed and youth, but it's actually the grinders and veteran presence (which is absolutely necessary on a successful team! ie the Dallas Drake's and Darren McCarty's or in Pittsburgh's case Gary Roberts) that can put a team over the top. They bring invaluable experience and are able to keep the other guys loose, and play with such a high level of intensity and desire.

GO WINGS GO!
